How to Prep for a Stress-Free Family Photoshoot in Abu Dhabi

(Yes, even with wild toddlers and snack demands)

Let’s be real—getting everyone dressed, out the door, and smiling at the same time feels like a small miracle. As a family photographer in Abu Dhabi, I’ve seen it all: missing shoes, toddler meltdowns, last-minute outfit swaps... and guess what? We still end up with beautiful photos.

Here’s how to prep like a pro (without losing your mind):

1. choose outfits that feel like you (but coordinated-ish)

One of the most common questions I get from clients is: “What should we wear?” I totally get it—it can be overwhelming trying to pick outfits that look good together without feeling forced. The key is to choose something that fits your style and makes you feel great, while keeping it cohesive for the whole family.

I know how tough it can be to pick the right clothes for a photo session, which is why I’ve created a guide to help you! If you’re unsure, you can send me pictures of your outfit options, and I’ll guide you through the process to make sure everything works together. My guide goes into even more detail on how to choose outfits that’ll make you look and feel your best in your family photos.

Pro tip #1: avoid loud logos and neon colors that could distract from the focus being on you.

Pro tip #2: If you have time, try your outfit at home and take a picture with your phone. Sometimes outfits look great in our heads, but they don’t always translate the same way in photos. It’s a quick way to make sure everything looks just right!

2. bring snacks

A well-fed child is a happy child. Pack mess-free snacks to keep energy levels up during your family photo session. And if they end up in the photo holding a cookie? That’s just real life—and it’s perfectly okay.

We also don’t have to take pictures the full hour—if you'd prefer to have a little snack break or let your little one recharge, that’s perfectly fine too!

3. prepare your kids for the shoot

The key to a smooth photo session is to make it feel like an experience, not a job. Tell your kids that a friend is coming to play with them at the beach (or wherever your shoot is taking place), and mom and dad are excited for them to snap some photos while everyone has fun.

A little reward at the end, like having pizza night, is a great idea, but it's all about framing the day as something exciting and enjoyable. Rather than saying, "You need to smile through the shoot if you want pizza," focus on the experience—“We’ll play, take some photos, and then have pizza when we’re done!” This way, they’ll feel more relaxed and ready to just enjoy the moment.

4. let go of perfection

We all want those picture-perfect family moments, but the truth is, some of the best shots come when we least expect them. Your kids don’t need to look straight at the camera or smile on cue. In fact, my favorite photos are the candid moments—when you’re all laughing, playing, or just being yourselves. The more they connect with you, the better.

When you’re relaxed and enjoying the moment, the photos will capture that natural, beautiful energy. Some of my favorite moments are the ones you couldn’t plan if you tried—like when your toddler runs off with a stick they’ve decided is the “magic wand,” or your little one suddenly pulls you in for a cuddle mid-session. That’s when your family’s personality really shows up, and those are the moments you’ll actually want to remember.

5. Your Attitude Is the Most Important Thing

Kids are like little sponges—they can pick up on your energy. If you’re relaxed, calm, and just having fun, they’ll follow your lead. Forget about trying to get everything just right. Instead, focus on enjoying the moment with your family.

When you’re at ease, your kids will be too, and that’s when the real magic happens in your photos. Your positive energy will shine through, making the session much more enjoyable for everyone.

I hope you've found these tips helpful as you prepare for your family photo session! The goal is to capture the moments that truly reflect who you are as a family. Remember, it's all about having fun and enjoying the experience. I’m here to guide you through the process and looking forward to meeting you soon!
